About the Transition
Why is this leadership transition happening now?
IDS has long believed in the power of internal succession. Since our founding in 1999, we’ve committed to a philosophy that honors those who’ve helped build the firm while supporting its future. Paul Stachowiak’s vision—and the lessons learned from observing other firms’ failed transitions—underscored the importance of a carefully considered handoff. We’ve come to recognize that succession isn’t a singular event, but a continuous process rooted in values, preparation, and shared purpose.
What role will Chuck Lewis play moving forward?
Chuck will remain the Chairman of the Board. He will continue to advise the firm strategically, support the leadership team, and ensure a smooth and thoughtful transfer of client relationships and institutional knowledge.
Who is Jeff Johnson, and what qualifies him to lead the firm?
Jeffrey D. Johnson, AIA, is the incoming President of Integrated Design Solutions (IDS) and a long-time leader known for advancing design excellence, strategic clarity, and high-performing teams. With decades of experience spanning higher education, workplace, and complex institutional environments, Jeff has helped shape IDS’ reputation for integrated, client-centered design.
Jeff previously served as Senior Vice President and Director of Higher Education & Workplace, guiding major design initiatives and building lasting partnerships across the region. His portfolio includes collaborations with globally recognized architects such as Zaha Hadid Architects, Preston Scott Cohen, Pelli Clarke Pelli, HGA, and others—reflecting his belief that bold ideas and interdisciplinary teamwork elevate human experience.
A graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy, Jeff holds a Bachelor of Architecture and is a licensed architect in Michigan. He is widely respected for his leadership rigor, thoughtful engagement, and mentorship of emerging talent. Colleagues know him as someone who challenges assumptions, listens deeply, and ensures every stakeholder’s goals remain central to the design process.
As President, Jeff brings a Design Foreword mindset to IDS’ next chapter—focused on strategic market growth, strengthening collaboration across disciplines, and nurturing a culture anchored in creativity, integrity, and performance. His leadership is defined by curiosity, accountability, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Q4: How long has this transition been in planning?
This transition has been under discussion for years as part of our long-term leadership development efforts. In 2025, the IDS Board actively engaged to align our values and vision for the future. Theses strategy sessions culminated in a unanimous vote during the second quarterly board meeting to approve Chuck’s transition and appoint Jeff Johnson as our next President, effective January 1, 2026.
What this means for the firm
Will Jeff be making major changes to how the firm operates?
No major operational shifts are being made as a result of this transition. Jeff’s leadership supports the existing trajectory of the firm. While some small adjustments will occur in support of our evolving strategy, these are part of a broader, ongoing visioning process—not a reaction to the leadership change.
Will any leadership roles or reporting structures change?
Some adjustments in the reporting structure will be made, aligned with our strategic plan and endorsed by the Board. More information will be shared as these updates are finalized and communicated with transparency.
What does this mean for IDS’ growth plans and strategic direction?
We are energized by this next phase in our evolution. Our commitment to our vision—Elevate Human Experiences with Design—remains strong. Our growth will continue to be mission-driven, not for growth’s sake, but in pursuit of meaningful design opportunities that empower our people and bring success to our partners.
How will employees be supported during the transition?
We are committed to open, consistent communication. Employees will continue to receive:
-
access to leadership and HR,
-
clear updates,
-
opportunities to ask questions,
-
leadership engagement events,
-
and involvement in internal projects tied to the strategic plan.
Our goal is to ensure every team member feels informed, supported, and connected.
Clients, Communication and Reputation
What are we doing to reassure clients about this change?
A leadership team is in place to personally connect with key clients, including the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Chuck’s gradual transition ensures that clients experience continuity at a comfortable pace. Jeff and others will continue shadowing Chuck to foster a smooth handoff of long-standing relationships.
How are we communicating this publicly?
A coordinated communication plan will include:
-
a formal announcement (January 6, 2026),
-
press release and website update,
-
social media messaging,
-
Crain’s feature,
-
client visits involving both Chuck and Jeff.
-
If you would like Jeff to meet any of your clients, please feel free to reach out and schedule a time to discuss. Our communication approach should emphasize confidence, continuity, and long-term vision.
Will Chuck still be involved in client relationships?
Yes. Chuck’s continued presence will help sustain and transition relationships thoughtfully. His ongoing contributions will remain valuable to our clients and internal teams alike.
Celebration, Feedback & Participation
How is the firm honoring Chuck’s leadership and legacy?
Chuck’s legacy will be properly honored closer to his full retirement. In the meantime, our Holiday Party on December 12, 2025, will bring together current team members and past retirees for a special celebration of IDS’ legacy and future.
How can employees share feedback or questions during the transition?
Our open-door culture remains unchanged. Employees are encouraged to connect directly with:
-
their team leader,
-
department director, manager or coordinator,
-
HR, or
-
any member of the leadership team.
Anonymous feedback opportunities will also be available, and employees will continue to play an active role in the strategic planning and implementation process.
This transition marks the next chapter in IDS’ journey. With deep respect for our legacy and bold optimism for the future, we’re excited to move forward together. Thank you for your continued commitment and trust.
